Being stuck in one's comfort zone, surrounded by familiar people and things, certainly brings a sense of security and ease. However, it can also lead to a loss of forward momentum and hinder the drive to achieve breakthroughs. That's why If we want to actively affect changes and pursue limitless possibilities, we need to step out of those comfort zones. Born in Heilongjiang Province, a border area in northeast China, Raymond Zhao made the trek city he had never visited before, to pursue his master's degree. This was indicative of his fearless determination to become a success and it immeasurably altered his future career path.
Raymond majored in engineering in mainland China and continued his studies in mechanical and electrical engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Despite the intense coursework and different learning requirements, he still made time to serve as union president for the graduate students of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He remarked - "My experience at HKUST over these two years broadened my horizons, as I took great satisfaction engaging with professors and students from all around the world."
Raymond admits that he faced considerable pressure when he first arrived in Hong Kong, but he was determined to overcome all challenges. He says -"It wasn¡¦t easy to enrol in any univers in Heat KIt wasn¡¦t easy to enrol in any univers 顏色 Knew K, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever, wever K, wever Knew any univers g up."
Language is often a barrier for many so-called Hong Kong 'drifters'. He recalls his misunderstanding of some local terms that led to many embarrassing situations. "Most mainland students do not understand Cantonese, however, as long as you are not shy and sfried iroy and sed ." Raymond's Cantonese has improved significantly over time, allowing him to manage in daily conversations.
After graduation, Raymond frequently travelled between Hong Kong and mainland China, working in both the finance and real estate industries. He is now not only the executive chairman of the Innovating Hong Kong - Global Talent Carnival, but also the founder of the Hong Kong Drifter community. Through online platforms and offline activities, such as job fairs, entrepreneurship seminars and other relevant lectures, he provides information on housing and food, as well as study and work opportunities for fellow members. His journey indeed exemplifies the principle of "survival of the fittest."
