Nurtures a New Generation's Entrepreneurial Spirit and Mastery of the Hi-tech Lifestyle
The ever-changing, rapid advancement of online media platforms, software, big data analytics and artificial intelligence is transforming industries with disruptive business operation models and talent development. For this reason, forward-looking enterprise employers now expect their staff to possess not only business or professional skills and a diligent work attitude, but also knowledge of how to apply the latest technologies in the context of an entrepreneurial mindset. To this end, New World Development's human resources and talent development strategies reflect this paradigm shift for the new generation.
Founded in 1970, New World Development Company Limited (NWD) was publicly listed in Hong Kong in 1972. Its core business areas include property development, infrastructure and services, retail, and hotels and serviced apartments across Hong Kong, mainland China, Macau and various other international cities. In recent years, the Group has been expanding its horizons based on its unique brand personality - The Artisanal Movement.
For years, New World Development has been striving to nurture the unique abilities and artisanal spirit of every staff member. It's no wonder then that the Group won this year's .Employer of Choice Award' along with the .Employee Engagement Award', .Innovative Recruitment Strategy Award' and .Compensation and Benefits Award'.
Projects Driven by Staff Initiative
A new one-stop mobile app, A.Connect, has recently been launched internally at the Company. "The work patterns of the younger generation are no longer confi ned to offi ce tables and desktops," says Teddy Liu, General Manager for Corporate and Talent Development. "A.Connect helps staff to follow new corporate developments and market promotions as well as to access staff benefits and activities. We make use of this app to carry out simple procedures like expense claims, leave applications, registrations for staff events and more, quickly and efficiently. It provides us with great convenience and enhances our cohesiveness."
At NWD, new technologies are being applied to provide effective solutions and enhance the overall customer experience. Liu explains that the Group has provided an array of training programmes since 2014 for the purpose of strengthening the knowledge and application of digital tools among staff members across different levels in the organisation.
To help staff attain a more effective work-life balance, NWD has allowed flexible working hours, and launched the .Inventing Your Future Education Sponsorship Scheme' to promote familyfriendly culture.
Challenging Intelligence through an Elevator Pitch
To boost an open and dynamic employer brand image, Jenny Chiu, Director for Human Resources of NWD, says that they have made use of social media like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to recruit young talents. For instance, NWD rolled out The Exceptional Challenge on Instagram to recruit students for its eightweek summer internship programme. "They can upload their creative work on our offi cial pages," she adds. "In addition, these applicants have to face the interesting Elevator Pitch challenge, in which they must respond to ad hoc questions in a limited period of time while taking the lift from ground level to the ninth fl oor."
Entrepreneurs to Drive Innovation
New World Group has recently launched a new talent acquisition initiative - A Entreprenerur Adventure Programme, which takes the form of a competition combining elements of a hackathon with other creative components, providing applicants with a great opportunity to present innovative ideas and demonstrate their creativity in advertising, animation, architecture, arts and antiques, design, fashion, publishing, education, film and television, gaming, multi-media, software, technology, wellness, and other areas.
